Restoring teacher confidence

Colorado’s voters passed Amendment 23 to ensure that our teachers would get a more equitable salary. BVSD has attempted to undermine this referendum, while at the same time slashing benefits and pensions. Teachers and the BVSD Board and staff are in frequent conflict as evidenced by the “no confidence” vote passed by the teachers in 2003.

Restoring teacher confidence in the administration is vital for the continued success of our schools. It is essential that we have school boards and administrations that are more responsive and in tune with the local needs and abilities of each school. Smaller districts will allow Board and staff members to better understand the schools they oversee. A Board member seeking to visit all the schools in today’s district even only once a year would require more than one visit a week and over 2,000 miles of travel! No wonder that one of our current Board members has frequently commented that she does not understand how the City of Boulder schools work. The current structure makes it impossible for the district’s governance to understand our teachers’ needs and issues. Smaller districts will bring management closer to home, benefiting our teachers and our children.

The proposal intends that teacher transfers across districts could occur.
