How the petition process works

  1. Petitions are signed by BVSD voters and authenticated.
  2. The state commissioner of education directs BVSD to convene an organizational planning committee.
  3. That committee, with support of public hearings, outlines an equitable plan of action to form two new districts.
  4. The plan is put on the ballot as a referendum for residents of BVSD to approve or disapprove.
  5. If the referendum passes, election of new school boards and the creation of management groups for each district proceeds.

How long will it take to accomplish this?

The process could be as short as one year or as long as several years, depending, in part, on the requirements of the State Commissioner of Education. Although time consuming, the result will be worthwhile as it will assure that the quality of public education is improved for present and future generations.
